Thermal performance analysis of compact thermal energy storage unit-An experimental study

In this study, an experimental setup is developed to assess the thermal performance of a compact Latent Heat Thermal Energy Storage System (LHTESS) prototype during charging/discharging stages. The LHTESS consists shell and horizontally oriented multi-tube heat exchanger commercially available paraffin wax RT44HC, which has phase change temperature between 41°C 43 °C as energy storage medium. testing campaign evaluated influence several operating conditions including transfer fluid (HTF) volume flow rate inlet on power input output, melting solidification time stored released. From results, it was observed that increasing HTF significant effect charging compared changing rate. When charged using fixed 60 °C, process period took 296.3 min, 233.5 204.8 min 197.8 when 3.0, 4.5, 6.0 7.5 L/min. However, at 4.5 L/min, results show completion for temperatures 55°C, 65°C are 316.6, 209.67 respectively. from analysis showed discharge significantly longer than due ever-growing layer solid PCM around external surface throughout discharging reduces coefficient HTF.
